Lieu du stage :
LECOB UMR822, Observatoire Océanologique de Banyuls, Sorbonne Université CNRS, 66650 Banyuls-sur-Mer.

Description et objectif scientifique :
In sandy sediment, tube dwelling annelids construct a gelatinous tube with sediment grains adhering to it. We want to test if these organic-rich parts of the sediment could concentrate organic pollutants. Hydrocarbons are semivolatile pollutants with a strong affinity for organic carbon. The practise will consist in setting-up an expermental design to test the adsorption of hydrocarbons on newly formed tubes of Eupolymia worms, in collaboration with Dr. Celine Labrune, a specialist in sediment fauna.
The worms will be collected by scuba diving and extruded from their tube. They will be set in aquaria containing sediment and optimal conditions for tube reconstruction will be explored by the student. In a second time, exposure experiments where polycylic aromatic hydrocarbons will be amended to the system will be explored.

The date of the internship are marked here as starting on April 18th, but it can be changed either earlier or later.

Language requirements: English is fine. Student will be immersed in a french-speaking sourrounding.

Specific competences required : For this professionnal practice, repetive lab work is expected with many unsuccessful attempts. The worms are very fragile, and the student is expected to be patient, carefull, and optimistic.

Safety issues: The student will receive a safety formation to work in chemistry labs.

Accommodation possibilities : There is a student residence, but it should be booked in advance.
Additional costs to be covered by the student: No

COVID-19 contingency plan: The practice is set-up to be a lab work, with a lot of time working with living animal. In case of restriction due to COVID, the topic will be changed to a literature survey of pollutant content in worm, and a distancial learning of hydrocarbon quantification in lagoon sediment samples.
format: on-site.
