Objectives and research themes

The research activities of LECOB are dealing  with the complex ecogeochemical interaction networks formed on the seafloor by organisms and the abiotic components of their environment. They aim at defining mechanisms and processes underlying the establishment and changes of biodiversity, the transformation of organic compounds and energy transfer within ecosystems. The objective is to better understand and predict of the relationships between biodiversity dynamics, environmental variability and benthic ecosystem functionning

The reciproqual relationships between biological, chemical processes and their modulation by physical forcing is investigated in model environments across the shallow to deep-sea continuum: coastal sediment under extreme meteorological events, accumaulation zone of organic substrates, submarine canyons and underwater river fans, as well as deep-sea hydrothermal vents.

Our research projects are distributed on 2 complementary overarching  themes:

 Theme 1: DYNAMICS OF INTERACTIONS BETWEEN BIODIVERSITY AND ABIOTIC ENVIRONMENT COMPONENTS IN FRAGMENTED HABITATS
Theme 2:  MECANISMS OF ORGANIC SUBSTRATE TRANSFORMATION AND ENERGY TRANSFER IN BENTHIC ECOSYSTEMS
